Dominican Republic Trip 2006 & California

Dominican Republic 2006
My Birthday happens to fall on the very same day that Independence Day is celebrated in DR. February 27th is a very important, historical day, a day of carnival and the beginning of celebration filled with Dominican pride. Almost every dominican New York native has told me "your dominican and you have never traveled to your own country" and when I tell them the date of my birthday they say I have no idea what I am missing. Boy were they right!

Its a place in this world that really felt like home, that felt like I belonged and it made sense. I was so enchanted by the beauty, the people, the food, the music, the culture, and their way of life. Though it was all new to me it did not feel distant in anyway. I spent my birthday home for the first time in my life and I had the time of my life. I ate dinner on a bed over the ocean with the most beautiful view and with two of my friends. I partied till I could not walk. The people were so welcoming and loving. On the other end it did sadden me to see the poverty and disparity of such a great country. If you want to see someone smile just for the most simple things visit DR. Nothing can take away the rich music and soul that shines through everyone there. The Dominican's there are truly humble and beautiful.

There are some similarities with American Dominicans but there is a very big difference. The one thing we do have in common is that we all love to party and know how to have a great time. What was surprising to me was there over all high tolerance of homosexual behavior and femininity in men. It's really not an issue like it is here and there is less segregation with people and boxes to put them in. They appreciate the beauty in people no matter what you are. On that note unfortunately most gay men there don't really identify as gay but have gay sex and most straight men are hustlers who have sex with men but do not consider themselves gay either but yet there still is a big gay community.

This trip was possible because my best friends Mario who bought me this trip as a gift for my birthday. I want to thank him for giving me one of the best gifts I have ever received from anyone in my life. Thank you for making a dream come true.. I LOVE YOU!!!!

So mad love to all my Dominican's out there who know the beauty of our country. To those who have never bothered going, please take the time, its worth it.
