Dominican Republic 2006 My Birthday happens to fall on the very same day that Independence Day is celebrated in DR. February 27th is a very important, historical day, a day of carnival and the beginning of celebration filled with Dominican pride. Almost every dominican New York native has told me "your dominican and you have never traveled to your own country" and when I tell them the date of my birthday they say I have no idea what I am missing. Boy were they right! Its a place in this world that really felt like home, that felt like I belonged and it made sense.
